VMware UEM & Windows 10 1809 Start Menu roaming problem

I stumbled into a strange problem with roaming of the Start Menu in my new Windows 10 Build 1809 template lately. I have set up VMware UEM 9.6 and defined the Windows Setting to enable roaming of my Windows 10 Start menu.

First I suspected this to be related to mandatory profile as I have this defined. After doing some extensive digging, I found that the folder “…archives\Windows Settings\Win10Startmenu.zip\LocalAppData\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore” in my test-users archive was empty after archive export. All other settings was exported as defined in the UEM Console.

The reason for this was that the files was being locked by two Windows Services, WpnUserService and OneSyncSvc. VMware UEM could not roam these file during log off.

To remediate this issue I therefore created two Logoff tasks that stops these services before archive export is done:

  • Name: W10 Startmenu fix roaming cmd 1
  • Label: Windows 10 Start Menu Pre-logoff Roam fix
  • Command: C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -Command get-service WpnUserService_* | Stop-Service -force
  • Run task: Before profile archive export

  • Name: W10 Startmenu fix roaming cmd 2
  • Label: Windows 10 Start Menu Pre-logoff Roam fix
  • Command: C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -Command get-service OneSyncSvc_* | stop-service -force
  • Run task: Before profile archive export

After this I deleted the users UEM profile and tested again with the Start Menu correctly roaming between my floating instant  clones.

I will make sure to add this very handy info to my series about my VMware UEM Lab-setup here:
