Release date: August 13th 2023
Welcome to my Omnissa App Volumes series. The new version of App Volumes, 2406, was GA on July 25th 2024, with the build being 4.14.0.19. The Release Notes contains the following info about what is new, and can be reviewed here: App Volumes 4 Release Notes These are some of the New features etc:
What’s New
- Persistent Desktop Support
- Expanded Use Cases: New support for classic Windows desktop environments, a significant enhancement to our Apps Everywhere strategy. This new feature extends our efficient one-to-many provisioning model, previously available only for non-persistent desktops, to persistent virtual desktop environments.
- User-Installed Applications: Users can now install their own applications alongside those delivered by App Volumes.
- Enhanced Management: This feature supports desktops managed with tools like Omnissa Workspace ONE UEM and Microsoft Intune and Configuration Manager, enabling traditional system updates instead of relying solely on image updates in non-persistent environments.
- Installer Update: Administrators installing App Volumes agent will now see an option in the installer for selecting the Machine Type, making the setup process more tailored and efficient.
In this section I will describe how I upgraded my App Volumes infrastructure to v. 2406, but first, at what point in an upgrade procedure should we upgrade the VMware App Volumes Components? According to VMware’s official documentation, this should be done as shown below.
Before beginning the upgrade, I also verify that the upgrade path is supported in the Product Interoperability Matrix
The procedure used for upgrading is as follows:
