VMware Horizon – Setup Windows 10 template – Create and customize the virtual machine

Welcome to my VMware Horizon series. In this session I will describe how I created and customized the Virtual Machine for my template.

I start the “New Virtual Machine Wizard” in the VMware vSphere Web Client

createvm01

I select the “New Virtual Machine Creation Type”

createvm02

I select a VM Name and Folder

createvm03

I select my cluster for compute resource

createvm04

I select my datastore-cluster for storage

createvm05

I select the vSphere Compatibility Level

createvm06

I select my Windows Version and Architecture

createvm07

I specify “Virtual Hardware Settings”:

  • 4 vCpu’s
  • 4 GB Memory
  • PortGroup for my vNic
  • Video Card

In VM Options, I change from EFI to BIOS, select «Force EFI Setup»

createvm12

I Click “Edit Configuration” and add these settings:

  • isolation.tools.copy.disable        FALSE
  • isolation.tools.paste.disable      FALSE

createvm13

createvm14

I Click Finish to start creation of my template-VM

createvm15

Note that, during the VM creation, I did NOT configure it to boot from ISO. That is because I want to boot to BIOS first, disable some components and change back to EFI before I install Windows.

I launch Remote Console

createvm16

I Power Up my VM

createvm17

In BIOS, I select Advanced – I/O Device Configuration

createvm18

I disable Serial, Parallel & Floppy

createvm19

I change the Boot order

createvm20

I Exit Saving Changes

createvm21

Next, I PowerOff my VM

createvm22

I connect my Windows 10 ISO and Connect at Power On

createvm23

Finally, I change Firmware back to EFI

createvm24

That concludes my session about how I created and customized the Virtual Machine for my template. My next logical step will be installing Windows, covered here: VMware Horizon View Setup Template – Install Windows
