Release date: April 15th 2019
Welcome to my VMware Horizon series. In this sub-session I will describe how I customized Windows in my Server 2016 RDS template, prior to installing agents and applications.
After successfully deploying a new Server 2016 vm in my previous session, I’m now ready to proceed with customizing the MS 2016 Server. The first thing I do with my template is to disable Server Manager startup automatically at logon and disable IE Enhanced Security.
Next, I will add the Remote Desktop Session Host role. I start the “Add Roles and Features Wizard” in Server Manager, Next-Next-Next
I select the Remote Desktop Services role, Next
No features to add, Next
Next
I select the Remote Desktop Session Host, Next
Add Features
Next
I select “Restart the destination…”, Install
The server will now be restarted to complete the installation of roles and features.
Once my Server 2016 RDS is restarted, I will run the command below to enable Adobe Flash Player to run on Windows Server 2016
dism /online /add-package /packagepath:”C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Adobe-Flash-For-Windows-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.14393.0.mum”
Next, I will update Windows before I proceed
Once the template is updated and restarted, I run “NGEN, compactos and Dism”-commands to optimize and compress the template.
That concludes my session about how I customized Windows Server 2016 in my template. My next logical step will be to generalize Windows Server 2016, covered here: VMware Horizon – Setup Server 2016 RDS Template – Generalize Windows
