VMware Horizon – Troubleshooting “Error during provisioning: Initial publish failed.Fault type is UNKNOWN_FAULT_FATAL”

Release date: April 2th 2019

Welcome to my VMware Horizon series. I recently ran into a sudden problem with pushing a new image to my Instant Clone Pool, the error message is below:

Result: No new clones were created with the new Image

In the event viewer I saw the following not very informative error

I first tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Horizon Agent, still same error.

Next I tried creating a new pool with my new image, same error.

Lastly, I turned to Google and found in VMware User forum a suggestion that the template’s hard disk might need to be extended. In my template I had initially set this to 50 GB. I could not find any signs/warnings about missing disk space inside the OS of my template. As this is my LAB and I didn’t want to spend a lot of time researching this problem further, I proceeded with extending the partition. Deleted all snapshots, created a new snapshot, pushed image again.

Result: Success, this time the new clones were created without errors.

Note to myself: In the future, do no skimp on partition size when creating the template.

VMware Horizon planning, deployment etc.
