VMware vRealize Operations Manager – Upgrade from v.8.5.0 to v.8.6.2

Release date: March 1st 2022

Welcome to my vRealize Operations Manager series. vRealize Operations 8.6 was GA on Oct 12th 2021 and is as a major release looking at the long list of new features and enhancements available. The maintenance release v. 8.6.2 was released on Dec 21st 2021, which addresses some security vulnerabilities and also some performance issues. From VMware’s official Release Notes we can read what’s new in this version.

The version I will be upgrading from is v. 8.5.0

Before I launch the upgrade I check VMware Product Interoperability Matrix to see if my upgrade path is supported

I start out by downloading the installation media from VMware Customer Connect

I begin by by logging into the Admin-UI of my vRops Manager

Prior to upgrading I will need to take my cluster Offline.

Once the cluster is offline, I can start the actual upgrade process. It is best practice to install and run the Pre-Upgrade Assessment Tool before upgrading vRealize Operations Manager.

I proceed with uploading the PAK-file

Once the PAK-file is uploaded and validated, I proceed and click Next

I accept the License Agreement and read through the Important Update and Release Information

Finally, I click Install

Once I have run the Pre-Upgrade Assessment Tool and verified that the upgrade is safe, I start the actual vRops upgrade process

I browse and select my upgrade PAK-file, Upload

Once the PAK-file is uploaded and validated, I proceed and click Next

I accept the License Agreement and read through the Important Update and Release Information

Finally, I click Install

Once the upgrade have finished, after what seemed like a long time, a few cups of coffee, I can verify the running version and that the cluster was automatically taken Online after the upgrade finished.

This completes this little session about vRealize Operations Manager Upgrade. Lastly I log into my vRops and verify that all my dashboards are running and that the vCenter and Horizon solution is being monitored as it was before the upgrade.
